I am a teacher by profession and an ODL practitioner. I have seven years teaching experience in a conventional system (Senior Secondary Education) and nineteen years’ experience as an ODL practitioner. My ODL experience encompasses the following; Learning Centre Supervisor- working closely with part time tutors and learners, making sure that learners are supported academically, offering non- academic support in the form of administrative, guidance and counseling as well as monitoring tutor learner interaction. Learner Tutor Coordinator- Coordinating Regional activities geared towards empowering the learners with skills as well as coordinating support services rendered to learners, including academic support. I worked closely with part-time tutors, lectures, Programme Developers and Learning Centre Supervisors Guidance and Counseling Coordinator- this basically deals with offering psychosocial support and guidance to the learners as well as skills development. This is one area I am passionate about since I believe it is important to equip people with skills and the ability to manage themselves and their environment. In any setting, be it educational or work environment, it is important to equip learners with skills that will enable them to function fully. It is very important to make learners realize and use their emotional intelligence (strengths). If that has been taken care off, then everything else will fall into place. If institutions can invest in this type of support, then we will be able to graduate fully functioning individuals who will be able to cope with their academic work, excel in their work life and be able to cope with the ever changing/ dynamic demands of the industry.
